COINCRAFTERS COIN HISTORY

The American Silver Eagle: History, Design & Specifications

The American Silver Eagle combines one of the most celebrated designs in historic U.S. coinage with the modern American bullion coin program. First issued in 1986, each standard American Silver Eagle contains one troy ounce of .999 fine silver and carries a face value of one dollar.

The American Silver Eagle Begins in 1986

The United States Mint introduced the American Silver Eagle in 1986 as the nation's official silver bullion coin. Although the coin carries a legal-tender face value of one dollar, its silver content gives it a value independent of the denomination stamped on the coin.

American Silver Eagles have also been produced in collectible proof and uncirculated versions. These different finishes and methods of distribution serve different markets, but the familiar one-ounce silver format and Walking Liberty obverse unite the series.

Walking Liberty Returns

For the obverse of the new Silver Eagle, the United States Mint revived Adolph A. Weinman's famous Walking Liberty design, originally created for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar of 1916–1947.

Liberty strides toward the rising sun, enveloped in the folds of the American flag. Her right hand is extended while her left arm carries branches of laurel and oak.

The return of Weinman's design created a direct visual connection between a classic American circulating silver coin and the modern U.S. silver bullion program.

John Mercanti's Heraldic Eagle Reverse

When the American Silver Eagle debuted in 1986, its reverse was designed by John Mercanti, who later served as Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.

Mercanti's design featured a heraldic eagle with a shield. The eagle holds an olive branch in its right talon and arrows in its left, with stars arranged above it.

This reverse remained a defining feature of the American Silver Eagle for 35 years, from the program's introduction in 1986 through the original 2021 design.

A New American Silver Eagle in 2021

For the 35th anniversary of the American Eagle Coin Program in 2021, the United States Mint refreshed the Silver Eagle's obverse and introduced an entirely new reverse.

The new reverse was designed by artist Emily Damstra and sculpted by United States Mint Medallic Artist Michael Gaudioso. It depicts a bald eagle approaching a landing while carrying an oak branch, as if adding the branch to a nest.

The redesign created two distinct varieties of 2021 American Silver Eagles: coins with the original Mercanti reverse and coins with the new Damstra reverse.

Restoring Details From Weinman's Original Design

The 2021 changes extended beyond the reverse. Using modern technology and historical assets from the original Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the Mint refreshed the obverse to more closely reflect Weinman's original artistic vision.

Details of Liberty, the flag and the sun's rays were refined, and Weinman's traditional artist mark was restored to the design.

The redesigned coins also introduced enhanced anti-counterfeiting measures, including a variation in the reeded edge.

One Troy Ounce of .999 Fine Silver

The American Silver Eagle is struck in 99.9% silver and contains one troy ounce of silver. Unlike the historic 90% silver alloy used for the original Walking Liberty Half Dollar, the Silver Eagle is a modern fine-silver coin.

This difference is important even though the two coins share Weinman's Walking Liberty design. They come from very different periods of American coinage and were created for different purposes.

Bullion, Proof and Uncirculated Silver Eagles

The United States Mint produces American Silver Eagles in different versions. Bullion coins are primarily produced for precious-metal investment and are distributed through the Mint's network of authorized purchasers.

Proof and uncirculated Silver Eagles are collectible versions produced with specialized minting processes and finishes. Depending on the particular issue, mint facility and year, these collector coins may carry mint marks that are not present on standard bullion examples.

Regardless of finish, the American Silver Eagle has become one of the most recognizable modern U.S. silver coins.

The American Silver Eagle at CoinCrafters

CoinCrafters' American Silver Eagle Coin Ring begins with a genuine one-ounce American Silver Eagle containing .999 fine silver. The original coin itself is transformed by hand into the finished ring while preserving recognizable elements of its design.

The shared Walking Liberty imagery also connects the Silver Eagle directly to the historic coin that inspired it. CoinCrafters works with both genuine American Silver Eagles and original Walking Liberty Half Dollars, allowing the same celebrated Weinman design to be seen across two very different eras of American silver coinage.
